Class Description & Registration
Prenatal & Postpartum Bellydance - Wednesdays, 10:30-11:30 am
*SPRING SESSION (6 Weeks) - Coming Soon in April - please email [email protected] if you wish to register and receive further information on this class.
**Possible Wednesday evening class may be added if enough interest! Please email [email protected] if this interests you.
Belly dance originated as a dance FOR women BY women, passed down from mother to daughter to preserve its sacredness and honor its connections to birth and fertility. Bellydance naturally drops our center of awareness to the cradle of our hips, helping us to accept ourselves for the feminine beauty that we possess and connect with our growing baby in our bellies. It is low impact and gentle on the body, targeting the muscles needed for labor and to help baby descend. Long before modern medicine, women used bellydance to reduce pain in labor and bring their babies into the world.
Class will start with a gentle warmup and stretch, move into strengthening exercises, then proceed into the basics of bellydance movements along with easy low-impact combinations to get you dancing. We cover moves that are beneficial, gentle and healing, as well as going over those which should be avoided at this time. Class always ends with a relaxing and centering cool down.
These classes are for women in all stages of pregnancy, including those who have received the go-ahead to exercise again in the Postpartum period. Postpartum mothers are more than welcome to wear their new babies in class, gently rocking the little ones to sleep to the ancient rhythms from the Middle East. These classes are relaxed and laid-back, a warm supportive atmosphere where we can celebrate the beautiful journey into motherhood.
"A Bedouin Arab girl learns a pelvic dance during the puberty..and will belly dance when she is in labour. The belly dance represents the power of women to produce life." - Sheila Kitzinger, Rediscovering Birth, Little, Brown and Company (UK) 2000.
* Midwives, Nurses, Doctors, Doulas, and medical students are more than welcome to participate in these classes for the purpose of learning/education and appreciating the beauty of bellydance at this stage in life.
* Expectant moms and those in the postpartum period are more than welcome to join the regular Belly dance class sessions for more day/time options. (Though please email me first! I may be able to schedule another evening time slot if enough interest). Accommodations & modifications can be made (though please no baby wearing in regular classes).

About the Instructor
Ankara Rose bellydanced throughout her first pregnancy, practicing and performing up till 5 days before her son's birth - even using bellydance movements in the early stages of labor. She was blessed with a wonderful natural birth experience, and strongly believes in the power of bellydance to contribute to this factor. She encourages all women - no matter what their birth plan to be - to take care of your bodies in this precious period through both proper diet and regular, low impact exercise.
Now expecting her second child, she has long since wanted to bring this beautiful gentle and healing dance to women at this special time in their lives. Her research into natural childbirth, exercise safety for prenatal/postpartum and by applying her experience and training to her own daily life and pregnancies, Ankara Rose has acquired a deeper understanding of this dance at this stage in one's life and is happy to pass this art and it's many benefits on to other women.
